In Memoriam
Goose - Gone too soon to have a photo. Taken by a coon and followed in her namesake's path.
Poquita Tita - the smallest of the small ones. She started as the sweetest and cuddliest and was bullied into a lone wolf. She evaded a hawk that stalked her for three weeks, but eventually lost.
Yappa- tried to defend Goose and was never right in the head after that. He was a "bonus bird" that kept us guessing his breed for months. He would attack anyone and anything that came near his ladies, us included. He was eventually taken to a farm upstate - literally. There he is living his best life with other roos - or so we hope!
Chickpea - such a sweet, petite little girl! She was less than a pound and could fly out of the run without a thought. Sadly, this made her easy prey and a hawk swooped in and nabbed her from us.
Bonnie - What a beautiful, sweet girl! Yappa was not gentle and left her more than a little lacking in feathers. She was on her way to regrowing them all when she suddenly disappeared one late afternoon.
Habanero - She was always a spicy chick pecking at anything, and anyone, who went to hold her or pet her. She was such a love though! She had taken to wandering to the far side of the yard to lay her eggs in the old run when she disappeared.
Gordita - One of the original girls! She could talk to you non-stop!! She always welcomed you to the run and stayed by your side. She didn't want to be held, but she was there none the less. She began laying paper shelled eggs very early on, but we kept her anyway. This winter she ripped her comb and passed away. We miss her so very much! We think she had a hemophilia type of disorder.
Hei Hei - Named when there were no boys on the farm and that famous Disney film just came out. She is a funny lady who puts up with no funny business! She will keep all the boys (and girls) in line. She has been known to take on roosters and dogs to defend her humans. The last of the original 6, she is a cherished member of the group! Hei Hei sadly passed a few weeks ago. She began staring into space and deteriorated from there. She will never be replaced.
Boris - If anyone says that chickens do not know grief, they are lying. Boris was not one of our favorites but he was a sweet level-headed boy and no one was closer to him than his brother Bonsai. They were inseparable. Boris passed recently from unknown causes and Bonsai's grief was clear. He kept going back to where his brother died and just sitting or standing there, staring, for days afterward. Boris had a blessed life, for a blessed life is one which is loved deeply and immensely and missed immeasurably.
Marge - One of the original four Rhode Island Red ladies. She is a favorite on the post-apocalyptic homestead. She is super cuddly and a sweet, gentle gal. She lays medium-large brown eggs.
Moira
A Cream Legbar that was the victim of a bear attack. She tried to escape, but was cornered. She laid blue eggs.
Merida
Cleo (Cleopatra)
Cleo was named after Cleopatra due to her markings and country of origin. She was a sweet, bird who became sweeter over time. She was sadly killed by a hawk in August 2022. She fought him valiantly and even played dead to evade him.
Snuggles
Quite possibly my favorite bird ever! She was always looking to be with me and would cuddle up whenever I took time to sit. She was all love! She was killed by a hawk in Nov 2022. She was the first of the two Bresse to be killed. I put up wires to keep the hawk out but, ultimately, I had to install bird netting over the entire run to get rid of the hawk.
American Bresse - No Name
Killed by a hawk. She never received a name.
